Photographer’s choice: The Canon EOS 5Ds and 5DsR

The Unexpected Canon EOS 5Ds & 5DsR

There is always a buzz around the photography world just prior to a product launch but I don’t think many pro photographers were expecting Canon to introduce two DSLR cameras with a resolution of 50.6 Mega Pixels each!

(The two cameras are effectively the same; The Canon EOS 5DsR has the anti-alias filter removed to help improve the sharpness of the image.)

Big deal!

50 Million pixels is a big deal and is squarely aimed at photographers who like to use their pictures LARGE. The actual dimensions of the RAW file comes in at a whopping 8688 x 5792 pixels.

Who is this camera for?

This camera is aimed at studio, landscape, commercial, wedding and high-end editorial photographers. Or in other words a photographer who needs extremely fine detail in their pictures.

What does this mean for photographers?

Those Canon photographers thinking of moving to medium format, really don’t have to bother anymore, they can just buy the Canon 5Ds or 5DsR and keep all those Canon lenses that they have collected over the years.

For everyone else not using Canon and considering a move to medium format – it gives them something else to think about!

Canon v Nikon

Nikon don’t have anything close to this camera in terms of resolution, so watch this space – The Pixel Race has begun………Again

What Memory?

The Canon EOS 5Ds and 5DsR comes with dual memory card slots, one for an SD card and the other for a CF card. This allows you to extend your storage capacity within the camera or you can backup your work as you shoot.
